Every house, school, business, just about every building we use, relies on electricity to function in our modern world. From lighting and heating to powering devices and appliances, we constantly need an energy supply. But how that electricity is produced makes an enormous difference for the environment.

    The Dirty Truth

For decades, most of America’s power plants have burned fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas to generate the electricity we consume. While this process keeps the lights on, it also pumps harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases into our air.

Fortunately, we now have better options through eco-friendly renewable energy sources that produce electricity with little or no emissions at all. According to the experts at Commonwealth, these cleaner solutions are rapidly becoming more affordable and available nationwide.

    Understanding Renewables

Renewable energy sources harness naturally replenishing forces of nature like sunlight, wind, heat from the earth, flowing water in rivers, and even the rotation of the ocean tides. No matter how much energy we extract from them, these resources will not ever run out.

Compare that to non-renewable fossil fuels, which are finite resources that must be burned for power. Once they’re depleted, that’s it – they’re gone forever. This is why it’s so crucial that we transition to eco-friendly renewable power for a sustainable future.

    The Benefits

Making the switch to renewable energy yields big benefits for our planet and communities. Lower harmful emissions mean cleaner air and water with less pollution. Reducing greenhouse gases slows the dangerous effects of climate change.

Renewables can also provide more affordable electricity than fossil fuels over the long run. With free fuel from the sun, wind and water, the operating costs are very low compared to mining and transporting coal, oil and natural gas. It means more stable, predictable monthly energy bills.

Plus, renewable energy creates brand new well-paying job opportunities in fields like solar installation, wind turbine maintenance and renewable manufacturing. It fuels economic growth while protecting natural resources.

    Common Renewable Energy Sources

Solar power uses photovoltaic panels to directly convert sunlight into electricity that can flow into homes and businesses. It is the fastest growing energy source.

Wind turbines capture the kinetic energy of wind to spin generators, providing massive amounts of emissions-free power. Hydroelectric dams control the flow of water from rivers to turn turbines as well.

While still more expensive upfront, costs keep dropping rapidly each year due to advancing technologies and production methods. Tax credits and renewable energy incentive programs also help offset upfront expenses for homes and businesses switching to cleaner sources.

    Easy Steps to Go Green

Installing solar panels on your roof allows you to generate your own renewable power from sunshine. Look into net metering policies to sell excess electricity back to the grid.

Many utilities now offer green energy purchase options, allowing you to buy some or all your power from renewables like wind farms. A few extra dollars per month can make a significant difference.

Upgrading to energy efficient LED lightbulbs, insulating your home better, and unplugging devices when not in use are also great ways to reduce your environmental impact. Even small steps add up over time.

    Conclusion

While renewable energy production grows exponentially each year in America, we still get around 60% of our electricity from polluting fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. There’s still a long way to go towards a fully eco-friendly national energy mix.

Nonetheless, with rapid innovation across solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and more, the path towards a cleaner and healthier sustainable future powered by renewables is closer than you might think. It’s up to all of us as consumers to drive faster adoption through our daily choices and actions.
